Shopping Trip to Schulenberg
On a cool and foggy December morning a Precinct 3 bus was waiting at the Scout house to take 15 members of the LF garden club to Schulenberg for some Christmas gift shopping. For more details and photos, click here.
Christmas Luncheon

November Meeting

October Bus Trip to Mercer Arboretum

In Loving Memory of
Sheila Gifford Anderson
January 29, 1947 – June 5, 2024
Sheila Ann Anderson passed away unexpectedly on June 5, 2024, at the age of 77, after enjoying lunch with a dear friend. Her sweet smile and southern drawl will be deeply mourned by her surviving family, many friends and especially her garden club friends.

May Meeting

TGC District IV Spring Convention
The annual Texas Garden Club Spring convention was held on March 27, 2024 at the Lone Start Community Center in Montgomery, Tx. Fourteen Lakewood Forest garden club members carpooled to the meeting. To read the full report and to see more photographs, click here.
April Bus Trip to The Danish Heritage Museum in Danevang, TX
On a beautiful day in early April, a group of our members took a long bus ride to Danevang, Texas, the location of the Danish Heritage Museum. We were treated to a delicious traditional Danish meal and then toured the museum where we learned about the history of the early Danish immigrants to this area. March Bus Trip to Kleb Woods
50th Anniversary Celebration
Instead of our usual monthly meeting in March, our members enjoyed a much anticipated 50th Anniversary celebration. The celebration took the form of an Afternoon Tea Party, complete with delicious sandwiches, petit fours and other desserts, and pots of reviving hot tea. January 2024 General Meeting
Our program speaker was Irmi Willcockson from the Coastal Prairie Conservancy. In a very interesting presentation, she shared with us the goal of the organization to preserve the remaining natural habitat of the coastal area.
The club celebrated Carolyn Calvert’s big Birthday. After we sang the birthday song and congratulated her, she cut the fancy pink cake; a piece for everyone.

Christmas Lights Tour to River Oaks
At the beginning of December a bus full of garden club members headed into town for a tour of the spectacular Christmas lights in the River Oaks area. They were not disappointed and were able to enjoy the wonderful displays as the driver navigated skillfully through the neighborhood. October Trip to Brookwood and the Hemi Hideout

September Meeting
After a long, hot summer, the ladies of the Lakewood Forest Garden Club gathered at the Scour building to start a new garden club year. The extremely hot summer was the main topic of discussion. To read more about the meeting and see the photos, click here.
Communications Committee Beginning-of-the-Year Meeting
The committee met to discuss the upcoming year, catch up and have lunch. Bryan Museum Day Trip
Donna Stephens planned a bus day trip with guided tour of the Bryan Museum day trip followed by a lunch at ‘Shrimps N’ Stuff’ restaurant. Thirteen ladies withstood the heat on July 26th. For more info, click here.
May 2023 Meeting
The last meeting of the garden club year was a busy one. We had installation of officers, plant exchanges, collection of next years dues, and a speaker from Cy-creek Greenway Project. For all the info and photos, click here.
April 2023 Meeting
Our great speaker was Alejandro Cardenas Gonzales. His topic was “Creating healthy habitats” Good habitats for pollinators and butterflies must include shelter, food and water. Outside the meeting, a plethora of bulbs and tubers as well as tender vegetable and flower plants, grown from seeds, by Marilyn and Becky, were offered to the gardeners. Bette Gerhold, our Horticulture Chair introduced us to a native milkweed (Asclepius perennis) and demonstrated how to grow from seed. For our historians full report, click here.
Bus Trip to Nature’s Way Resources
On Tuesday, April 4th 2023, a few members of the LF garden club boarded a bus to take us to Nature’s Way Resources in Conroe, Tx. It was a pleasant but windy day when we arrived at the 42-acre organic soil yard. For more info, click here.
Texas Garden Club District IV Coastal Prairie Region
Spring Convention – March 21, 2023
The annual District IV convention was held in Houston this year. Nine members of the Lakewood Forest garden club carpooled to the Byland Community center for the event. Each club nominates a Garden Angel for the year. Margo Propst received the award from our club this year. For all the details, click here.
March 2023 Meeting
There was lots of activity during our March meeting, according to the Historians report. Payments for Spring Fling, sign up for John Fairey Garden sale, speaker Dr. Al Agard was our program speaker, 6 guest attending, and more. For the full report including photos, click here.
February 2023 Meeting
Eleese Lester-Baier gave a presentation on Recycle/Repurpose/Reuse/Reduce. She gave lots of hints and recipes for making your own ‘green’ cleaning products. January 2023 General Meeting
The club celebrated Zelma Mikolajczyk’s 90th birthday. Our program this month was Spring Vegetable Gardening. by Rick Castagno, a Harris County Master Gardener. To read the entire report from our historian, click here.
Galveston Cemetery Tour and Bus Trip
We saw monuments and heard interesting stories about heroes of the Texas Revolution, political figures dating back to the Republic of Texas, both Union and Confederate soldier of the Civil War, and stories of some infamous characters.We also learned about the yellow fever epidemic of 1839 which killed 725 people, and the tragic hurricane in September 1900 where the island lost over 8,000 lives.
Kathleen Shanahan Maca, our tour guide, authored a very interesting book intitled Galveston’s Broadway Cemeteries (Images of America) , which can be purchased through Amazon as a hardcopy and is available on kindle – free if you have kindle prime.
FAREWELL, BETTIE HUGHES
Bettie Hughes passed peacefully at her home on November 11, 2022. She had been an active member of Lakewood Forest Garden Club for 39 years where she held numerous offices. She opened her home on many occasions for flower shows, club luncheons and tours of her beautiful and diverse garden. You could find her working in her garden almost every day and was, in fact, working in the garden just one day before she passed. She won Yard of the Month many times and even won a radio gardening competition. She could always be counted on for help and all who knew her will miss her cheerful demeanor and ready advice.

For the annual Garden Club Christmas luncheon, our hostesses arranged the event to take place at the Champions Golf Club. And what a special treat this was!

November 2022 Meeting
Wally Wilkins and Kara Humphrey, both on staff in Hempstead, Texas, came to tell us about the gardens created by John Fairey, an artist, design professor and plant explorer. Wally brought with him several plant specimens he discussed during the presentation. Members that answered some of his questions correctly received these plants.

October 2022 Meeting
Our speaker, Jay White is owner and publisher of ‘Texas Gardener magazine His time in graduate school at Texas A&M helped him develop a passion for the science of horticulture. Today’s presentation was on creating flower arrangements with locally grown flowers. He provided many examples of these flowers and had several of our members create flower arrangements. Day Trip to Martha’s Bloomers (2022)
On a sunny, but cool October 4th morning, 23 ladies took a Precinct 3 bus to Martha’s Bloomer for shopping and lunch. They then traveled on to Antique Rose Emporium for more shopping. For more about the trip, click here.
